With thanks to Mom!
Many forms of meditation use a mantra. Wikipedia defines it as “a sound, syllable, word, or group of words that are considered capable of “creating transformation” (cf. spiritual transformation).” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mantra
They are fascinating to learn about. Considered at the same time a source of energy and power while quieting the mind. They are ancient, attached to many traditions but simultaneously new, evolving and personal.
Mom hums. Sometimes purposefully, sometimes not. And it occurred to me in the kitchen yesterday that it is a form of meditation, a quieting mantra. We tease her because it is so pervasive (and that is our way) but really, it is a useful tool. She defended the hum as a calming mechanism, helping her to refrain from negative thoughts and comments. It is a reminder of presence.
In other words, it is a mantra meditation.
And I thought, how amazing our minds are – to seek out what will help and heal, even though we may not know precisely what we are looking for.

The wikipedia article is not bad either – although subject to debate.
