Fighting

I don’t approve of fighting.

It’s an often heard objection to martial arts training.

Well, of course, we don’t teach the children to beat each other up.

But we do teach them how to defend themselves, which may mean fighting. And we give them fight – confidence, strength, energy, focus. Because no matter how much we want to protect our children, life is a series of fights – challenges that can overwhelm or be overcome.

We practice our self-defense moves over and over and over, so if heaven forbid, it’s necessary, it’s there without thinking, an automatic response.  We practice our life skills so that when we are outside of the dojang, we still represent what a martial artist should be.
