I met with a new student today. Just six, she was excited to be at the school, exuberant during all the drills and mad for martial arts in general. Big sis at 13 however, was reluctant. But as I was going over with Dad some of the things we teach, I had her come on the mat, grabbed her wrist (lightly) and asked, “What are you going to do?”
She had no idea.
We went over a basic move toward the thumb release. Father and daughter were both surprised at its effectiveness. Granted, if the attacker is much stronger you will probably need a combination of moves. But you have to begin somewhere. The worst thing you can do is nothing.
